About the job

Nature of work:

These senior and middle managers plan, organize, and direct various activities in industrial, commercial, governmental, or other settings. They may develop policies and procedures, control budgets, negotiate with clients, ensure compliance with governmental regulations, and recruit and train personnel. Managers in this group are employed in a variety of organizations that could include insurance companies, real estate firms, investment companies, banks, credit departments, government, consulting businesses, contact centres, and advertising, marketing, and public relations firms.

Job duties:
Managers in financial and business services perform some or all of the following duties:
  • Plan, organize, direct, control and evaluate the operations of an organization or department that provides insurance services, credit services, investment services, real estate, advertising, management consulting, market research, or a bank or similar financial institution.
  • Ensure the institution's policies and procedures are followed according to established guidelines and make recommendations for improvement.
  • Recruit personnel and identify their training needs.
  • Develop business relations to promote services, attract customers, and establish distribution networks for products and services.
  • Develop action plans, provide expertise in response to client needs, and support and advise project teams.
  • Plan, administer and control budgets for client projects, contracts, equipment and supplies.
  • Banking and credit managers analyze, review, and approve or reject loan and credit applications in accordance with authorized limits as well as monitor the processing of loan applications and credit investigations.
  • Marketing managers initiate market research studies and analyze their findings, assist in product development, and direct and evaluate the marketing strategies of establishments.
  • Public relations managers direct and evaluate establishments and departments that develop and implement communication strategies and information programs, publicize activities and events, and maintain media relations on behalf of businesses, governments and other organizations.
  • Managers of finance work closely with managers from other departments in financial and strategic planning. Bank managers and other investment managers also promote loan, investment, and other banking services, and approve or reject loan applications.
  • Engineering managers oversee the design, development, and inspection of technical projects or engineering work. Information systems managers analyze requirements, and develop and implement new computerized information system and data processing systems.
  • Insurance claims managers manage departments or institutions that handle insurance claims. Telecommunications managers direct and control telephone or satellite telecommunications within an area, evaluate installation, operation, and maintenance services, and confer with representatives of related or connecting companies to ensure efficient operations.

Job requirements:
  • A university degree or college diploma in a related field is usually required.
  • A master’s degree may be required for some positions.
  • Several years of experience within the appropriate industry are usually required.
  • Licences, certificates or registration may be required for some business services managers. For example, accounting firm managers usually require accounting certification.
Other considerations:

Progression to senior management positions is possible with experience. There are varying levels of mobility between the different types of managers in this group.
