About the job

Nature of work:

These individuals supervise and coordinate the activities of clerical workers. Duties may include coordinating, assigning, and reviewing the work of clerks; establishing work schedules and procedures; resolving work-related problems; preparing progress and other reports; training workers in job duties, safety procedures, and company policies; and ensuring the smooth operation of computer systems and equipment. Clerical supervisors may perform some of the same duties as the supervised workers. They are employed throughout the public and private sectors.

Job duties:
Administrative services supervisors perform some or all of the following duties:
  • Coordinate, assign, and review the work of clerks.
  • Establish work schedules and procedures and coordinate activities with other work units or departments.
  • Resolve work-related problems and prepare and submit progress and other reports.
  • Train workers in job duties, safety procedures and company policies.
  • Requisition supplies and materials.
  • Ensure smooth operation of office equipment and machinery, and arrange for maintenance and repair work.
  • May perform the same duties as workers supervised.

Skills:

As there are many jobs in this group, the skills and aptitudes are varied. Leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills are essential. You should also have initiative and be able to make decisions and solve problems. Several years of experience in the job supervised are usually required to progress to the supervisory level.

Job requirements:
  • Completion of secondary school is required.
  • Completion of a college program or courses related to the area supervised may be required.
Other considerations:

The duties performed by clerical supervisors are evolving as new technology is introduced. Supervisors and clerks should be prepared to keep abreast of changing office technology and processes.
